Top 10 Most Successful Movie Franchises Ever:

The Numbers has compiled a list of the top 10 film franchises in terms of international box office revenue. Even though the conclusion to the Avengers film trilogy, Avengers: Endgame, won’t even hit theaters until April 26, 2019, box office analysts are already forecasting huge things for the massive Marvel team-up. Particularly in light of the fact that even the most optimistic forecasters appeared to underestimate Avengers: Infinity War’s potential for financial success, which managed to shatter all prior worldwide opening weekend records with its enormous $640.5 million global gross.

While Infinity War currently holds the top spot for the highest-grossing movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with over $2 billion worldwide, it is about to face competition from not only the upcoming Avengers movie but also from Captain Marvel, which has already made more than $760 million in just over one week of release. And with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home in July, the franchise will continue to dominate all other movie series long into 2019 and beyond. (Star Wars is included, yes.)

1. The Marvel Cinematic Universe made $18,263,221,776 worldwide.

Even though it may seem unfair, Hollywood considers the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, which includes the films The Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, and Guardians of the Galaxy, to be a single brand. With 28 movies (and counting) released over the past 12 years, Avengers: Infinity War ($2,048,797,682), The Avengers ($1,517,935,897), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1,403,013,963), and Black Panther ($1,348,258,224) are the most financially successful.Top 10 Most Successful Movie Franchises Ever

Star Wars : 2.$9,307,186,202

Since Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise in 2012, they have been making up for lost time with new episodes of the original space opera as well as a number of standalone series, including a new trilogy created by the Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The original Star Wars film has been in theaters for more than 40 years and has captivated audiences worldwide. Although it might take the Mouse House a few years to match Marvel’s number of movies, given how quickly they are producing them, we won’t have to wait too long. On December 20, 2019, the still-untitled Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters.

3. Harry Potter’s global earnings were $9,185,046,972

J. K. Rowling’s young wizard has proven to be just as successful on the big screen as it was in the books. Twelve film adaptations have been made and released since 2001, starting with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Although almost all of them, including Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), has come close to the $1 billion mark, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II (2011) earned the most money with a global gross of $1,341,693,157. This box office juggernaut has a sequel planned for 2020, so it has no intention of slowing down. Top 10 Most Successful Movie Franchises Ever.

James Bond 4: $7,077,929,291

While the issue of “Who will portray the next James Bond?” is as ancient as this film series itself, one thing that has never been in doubt is the appeal of 007, who only appears to be getting better with age. The James Bond film series, which began in 1963 with Dr. No, has had some of its most critically praised and financially successful installments during the Daniel Craig era. The franchise’s high ranking on this list, however, is mostly attributable to 2012’s Skyfall, which brought in $1,110,526,981 globally.

5. The Lord of the Rings made $5,886,273,810 worldwide.

To begin with, it’s crucial to remember that Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth series also comprises all three The Hobbit films in addition to The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Even if the latter may have received greater critical praise, both series ultimately helped the franchise achieve this position: The two largest earners out of the six movies are The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King from 2003 ($1,141,403,341) and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey from 2012 ($1,017,003,568).

6. X-Men:  $5,803,267,631

Despite being a Marvel product, the X-Men are viewed as a distinct (mutant) entity in the realm of box business. This is especially noteworthy given that the franchise’s 14 films will have made enough money on their own to compete with their cinematic parent on a somewhat equal footing. Ryan Reynolds’ two Deadpool films, with a worldwide gross of $801,025,593 for the original and $786,680,557 for its 2018 sequel, led this series in ticket sales, while 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past managed to create a $747,862,775-sized dent at the box office. Expect these totals to increase—and quickly—given the buzz around X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which came out in June.

7. Fast and the Furious: $5,136,814,346 in worldwide revenue

With eight action-packed movies that seem to get more and more popular with each release, it’s likely that even the Fast and the Furious series’ creators are a bit taken aback by how popular the franchise has become. The Fast and the Furious: The Fate of the Furious made nearly six times as much money as its predecessor, The Fast and the Furious, which debuted in 2001 and earned a respectable $206,512,310. Therefore, the fact that two additional movies are already in development for 2020 and 2021 shouldn’t come as a surprise.

8.Jurassic Park : $4,977,979,246

Jurassic Park was able to break into the top 10 franchises in 2018 because of the $1,305,772,799 in worldwide box office revenue from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. But considering that the 1993 original movie brought in $1,038,812,584, it feels like a long-deserved honor. Only five films have been produced in the Jurassic Park franchise, one of the top 10 highest-grossing ones (and another on the way).Top 10 Most Successful Movie Franchises Ever

9. DC Extended Universe:$4,902,327,466

Although the DC Extended Universe still has a ways to go before it can catch up to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it appears to be gaining momentum. Following the success of Wonder Woman at the box office in 2017, which brought in $821,133,378, the studio witnessed its most successful year yet in 2018 with the release of Aquaman, which brought in $1,143,689,193. (and counting). Shazam!, Justice League vs. The Fatal Five, Joker, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and Wonder Woman 1984 are just a few of the comic book movies studio’s upcoming releases in the next two years. (An Aquaman follow-up is also in development.

10. Spider-Man: $4,858,774,307

With its audience-pleasing blend of action, humor, and just a hint of camp, Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man marked the beginning of a new era in comic book filmmaking. The highest money was made by his final installment in the series, Spider-Man 3, which amassed a box office haul of $894,860,230. After two reboots, fans of the constantly evolving web-slinger don’t seem to be growing weary of him; 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming earned a respectable $880,206,511 worldwide (and a sequel is already in production for 2019).Top 10 Most Successful Movie Franchises Ever
